Beam me up Scottie (Wolfie) November 5, 2008
Posted by chetan in : US Wireless Market , trackbackIn a night of several firsts, CNN pulled off another one with hologram reporting
Is this the future of field reporting, client meetings?
I had first read about it when a colleague of mine Dr. Hugh Bradlow, CTO of Telstra in Australia had mentioned this in his blog.
It is amazing how quick the technologies are moving from labs to mainstream.

If you are going to beam your reporters back in the studio, why send them there in the first place :-). On a serious note, other than the coolness factor, I don’t understand how this technology can be useful. The reporter is standing in an isolated circular green room with 35 cameras. What’s wrong with using just one? I remembered 10 years back, people were talking about how every landline phone in the home would have video capabilities which will enable you to see the other person (although there are instances where you probably don’t want that). Our networks, infrastructure, devices are not capable of handling 1 camera, now we are talking about 35 !! maybe some high-end research projects and porno industry can make some use of this technology..
good point. i think CNN just wanted to look cool. the equipment is too complex and bulky right now. to be effective and useful, the cost needs to come down to video conferencing level. i won’t mind using this if i can avoid hours of flights for a 1 hr meeting.
