I’d rather see a graph of phone data use, than mobile network revenue.
The US has one of the least competitive phone network markets in the world. It’s very difficult for consumers to buy unlocked (”sim-free”) phones in America, difficult to switch operators because of very long contracts and difficult to compare prices because of over-complicated plans. US operators also have a history of forcing manufacturers to cripple non-operator wireless features such as bluetooth and wi-fi (look at the wifi Nokia E61’s inexcusable transformation in the US market into the non-wifi E62).
Americans are sometimes forced to use mobile phone data simply because their phone has been made incapable of using non-operator methods.
Krisse,
Thanks for writing. M:Metrics and Telephia track usage for mobile data in the US. you are right, US is much more closed than some of the other major markets.
